 Right in the middle of Jodhpur's walled city, this 39-room hotel is in a restored Rajasthani palace and a number of new buildings built from local rose stone so as not to jar with the original 18th-century architecture. The stylishly minimalist rooms have Indian touches such as pink latticed screens, hand-cut wall panels and bathtubs set in stone. Facilities include a small spa, a brand-new rooftop bar and two restaurants serving Indian and international cuisine. X-factor Its proximity to Mahranghar Fort, atmospherically lit at night (all but four of the suites have direct views of it)

 On a recent trip to rajasthan, india, designboom got up close and personal with new delhi-based practice lotus. we visited the studio and had a close look on the new works the practice is currently working on. Ambrish Arora, principal of lotus, gave us an in-depth presentation on raas jodhpur, a boutique hotel located in the heart of jodhpur, india. the project was a collaboration between lotus and bangalore-based firm praxis. together under the name, lotus praxis initiaive, arora and rajiv majumdar from praxis, underwent their first major commissioned work. to date the establishment has won best holiday building at the 2011 world architecture festival (WAF) and was chosen as one of the best hotels in the world by conde nast traveller for the gold list 2011.

 In the heart of the walled city of jodhpur, rajasthan, the new delhi-based multidisciplinary firm lotus has collaborated with bangalore-based firm praxis inc. to complete 'raas jodhpur' a 39 room boutique hotel. set at the base of mehragnarh fort this structure is the 2011 world architecture festival's 'holiday building of the year' winner. the 1.5-acre property consists of three 18th century structures located around a central courtyard. the buildings have been restored using original lime mortar and jodhpur sandstone along with the workmanship of 100 artisans to create a tactile experience within the context of the historical city.

 RAAS bills itself as Jodhpur's first boutique hotel, but that doesn't even begin to do it justice. The bedrooms are hip and the bathrooms sleek, but RAAS's main selling point is its stunning location, smack in the middle of Jodhpur's ancient walled city, close to the Clock Tower, and with amazing views of mighty Mehrangarh Fort, the best-preserved fort in India (a trick of perspective makes it seem as though you could reach out and touch it).

 Delhi-based design agency Lotus has revamped an existing 3000sq. ft. museum shop in a 15th century fort in Jodhpur that had been functioning as a shop for crafts and memorabilia form the region. And the since the area under renovation had a historic heritage, the proposed intervention required a very sensitive approach.

A T INDIA'S FIRST-EVER INDIA DESIGN FORUM (IDF), held in early March at Delhi’s Le Méridien hotel, a full auditorium listened in rapt silence to an eloquent, cutting critique of urban Indian design. That is, until they erupted in laughter when the ubiquitous penguin dustbin came on screen, followed by images of homes seemingly inspired from neighbourhoods in Spain and Morocco and Aspen, and by a signboard that read ‘10 Downing Street’.
