Nair House
The brief was to design a vacation home for a small family of four at Coonoor with a built up area of 3000sq ft. located at an altitude of 1800m, Coonoor lies in the blue mountains of Nilgiris covered with lush green estates of tea and coffee, fruit orchards and botanical gardens. Weather in Coonoor is extremely pleasant throughout the year. Summer extends from March to May with highs and lows of 27 degrees and 15 degrees. Monsoon sets in from May lasting up to September, characterized by short spurts of rain and strong winds with temperatures ranging between 22 degrees to 14 degrees. From September to February are the winters with temperature between 10 degrees to 20 degrees. The house was to be conceived as a pre-engineered structure keeping in mind the vagaries of local building labor. This approach minimizes damage to the site’s ecology and simultaneously reduces the duration of construction. The slope of our site allowed for the house to step down, while the south and east faces opened to the vistas of the picturesque coffee plantations around the valley. We wanted to optimize on the intake of sun light by virtue of the form of the roof, in response to the climate of Coonoor.
